Urban Lyrebirds brings together the experiences of three passionate educators.
Carmel has over 20 years' experience teaching English language skills in a variety of contexts in Australia and internationally.
She has worked in refugee camps in Thailand developing EAL curricula and cultural awareness programs, and has directed and co- written student performances for EAL students on language and cultural themes.
Carmel has written EAL materials including ‘What’s the law? Australian law for new arrivals’ and ‘Pictures to Words’ Book 1. In 2008 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel and research ‘ ESL through Performance’.
Sharon has 20 years’ experience teaching English to new migrants. In her role as an EAL teacher, she has taught students of all language levels from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Over this period of time, she has created numerous materials for EAL teachers, including writing text book and e-learning resources for the Australia wide Distance Learning course ‘Your call’.
Sharon has delivered many workshops and papers on a wide range of EAL topics designed to enhance the second language learning environment.
Vale Maggie Power
Maggie was a dear friend and colleague of Carmel and Sharon. She was one of the co-founders of Urban Lyrebirds. She was a wonderful EAL teacher of more than 20 years’ experience and a very talented writer who wrote and co-wrote over 40 EAL and mainstream education resources.
Maggie’s publications included the ever popular Passages to English books, At Work in Australia and resources for migrants working in child care, retail, hospitality, factories and general work place health and safety.
Titles of Maggie’s books include: Passages to English, 1 and 2, Speak Safe- OHS awareness for CALD workers; Caring for Children- Effective communication for CALD workers in child care; It’s your right! Human rights every one, everywhere, everyday; Can I help you? -Effective communication for workers in customer service.
Urban Lyrebirds will continue to promote and sell Maggie's wonderful resources. The proceeds will go to her family.
We miss her terribly but she continues to be our inspiration.
